1Timothy,Paul's Epistle To The

[Gr.Timotheos/Timotheus"dear to God"]

Courtesy of James Earl Jones(Bible Audio)1Timothy

Background:Paul had met Timothy on his second tour(Ac16:1-3)and Timothy had worked with him.Now he was a leader in the church at Ephesus and Paul writes to encourage him and give him advice about organising the church there. He writes about public prayer, appointment of leaders, help for widows and attitudes to slaves(2-5).He warns about those who teach differently to what has been taught by recognised leaders.
Author:Paul(1:1,see2:7,see Romans)

Date and Location:Paul's travel notes in 1Ti-Tit(1:3;2 Ti1:17; 4:9,13,20 Tit1:5;3:12)do not match any events in Acts.

This plus Paul's sense of impending death in 2Ti.suggests the following chronology for Paul's later yrs:
-He was released from the house arrest that begun in Ac28:30,31
-He traveled and evangelized widely, reflected in the travel notes

He was then arrested again:
*2Ti.travel notes suggest an emergency situation(2Ti1:17;4:9,13,20)
*Several comments in 2Ti.reflect prison life(2Ti1:8;2:9;4:6-22)
-He was martyr.Paul expect this in 2Ti.and tradition strongly suggests it
*1Ti.was probably the first of three letters, being written Ad62-64 from Macedonia(1:3).Titus was written a little later, 2Ti coming 3-5yrs later.

Purpose:
-Encourage Timothy's faith,1
-Instruct him concerning church organization,2,3
-Instruct him concerning personal conduct,4-6

Unique Features:
-One of the Bible resources on church organization
-Emphasizes "right teaching"(1:10)but is primarily practical rather than doctrinal

Comparison:
*Col. and 1Jn.-deals with the Gnostic heresy
*2Ti. and Tit.-reflect Paul's pastoral concern for the churches
*2Th2;1Ti4;;2Ti3;2P2;Jd-warn of apostasy

Abbreviations:1Tim./ Ti
