Romans,Paul's Epistle To The

[L.Romanus/Roma "Rome"]

Courtesy of James Earl Jones(Bible Audio)The Book of Romans

Background:The first of 21 letters found in the NT.

They are very important because they give us an inside view of life in the earliest Christian churches and the teaching of their leaders.Paul had not been to Rome when he wrote this letter. It is the most detailed account of an important part of his teaching :that the only way to be accepted by God was to rely on what Jesus did through his death and resurrection,1-8.In Ch9-11Paul expresses the hope that although the Jews have largely refused this teaching they will one day accept it.Romans follows the pattern of most of Paul's letter:the first teaching and the second practical application in real life. Thus ch12-16speaks of how Christians should behave in the church and in the world.

Author:Paul, great apostle to the Gentile.Born Saul in the Cilician city of Tarsus,Paul was Jewish by birth,Roman citizenship, and Greek by culture.Educated as a Pharisee,he was dramatically converted to to Christ,Ac9:22;26and became the foremost evangelist as well as the foremost theologian of the early church.Luke tells the story of Paul's life and ministry in Acts.Paul himself explains the faith in Christ that propelled that ministry in his 13letters(Romans-Philemon).Some scholars believe he also wrote Hebrews

Date and Location:Late winter of AD57 or early spring of 58,22yrs of Paul's conversion during last 3months of his third missionary journey while in Greece,Ac20:3.More specifically,he was probably in Corinth staying with Gaius,16:23;1Co1:14

Recipients:Christians in Rome

Purpose:
-Annonce his plans to visit and enlist their support,15:24,28,29
-teach fundamental doctrine of salvation,in order to fortify the against Judaizers,1-8
-explain the unbelief of Israel and vindicate God's faithful in his dealing with that nations,9-11
-give practical instruction in Christian living,12-16

Unique Features:
-Most complete summary of Christian doctrine
-Romans did quoted the OT more than his 12,excluding Philemon
-Ro1:20,Greek "the invisible must be understood by the visible"That was not a Hebrew idea, it was Greek

Comparison:see Genesis

Background: This is the second installment of the story begun in Luke's Gospel and tells us what happened in early church in the first 30yrs or so. It begins with the ascension of Jesus(1) and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentacost(2). The next 10chapters show how the gospel spread beyond the locality of Jerusalem as far as Samaria,Peter, Stephen and Jacob are the main characters. Chapters 13-28 center on Paul and his 3 missionary tours taking the gospel to Greece and Europe. The whole book shows that the main source of opposition to the "new religion" came from the Jews, not the Roman government. 28chapters

Date and Location: Probably AD60-62, since it ends before Paul's release from prison in 62 and makes no mention of the Neronian persecutions that began in 64

John 15:13-16 King James Version

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Romans 5:7-9 King James Version

7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Ch. 11

Ch. 12-13

Ch.14-15

Ch.16-17

Ch.18

Ch. 19-20

Ch.21

Background:It is obvious from the first verse that this Gospel is very different in atmosphere to the other three. Jesus'miracles are called signs,Jesus does not speak of the kingdom but of eternal life. There are no parables but several long, rather complex sermons which are usually linked to one of the signs. Thus when Jesus heals a blind man he speaks of himself as "the light of the world". These "I Am"sayings are quite dustinctive to this Gospel and the accounts of Jesus'appearances after his resurrection are also unique. 21 chapters

Author:John the beloved disciple of Jesus Christ(21:20-25Ga2:9)

Date: Probably AD85-95,some 20yrs after Synoptics. John's 5 books were the last NT books written

Location and Recipients: Eusebius says John lived in Ephesus after Paul founded the church there;he conducted a kind of home-missions ministry, this Gospel and letters were a part of that ministry

Purpose:Presenting Jesus was indeed the Messiah, the Son of God and Saviour of the world(20:20-31)

Unique Features:
*John choose 7 miracles to prove that Jesus is the Messiah
-changing water into wine,2:1-11
-Healing of Nobleman's son, 4:46-54
-Healing the lame man at Bethesda,5:1-18
-Feeding 5000,6:5-14
-Walking on water,6:16-21
-Healing of the blind man,9:1-7
-Raising of Lazarus,15:1

*Recorded 7 occassions when Jesus bore witness to his Messiahship:
^"I am the bread of life",6:35
^"I am the light of the world",8:12
^"I am the the gate",10:7
^"I am the good shepherd",10:11,14
^"I am the resurrection and the life",11:25
^"I am the way,the truth,and the life",14:6
^"I am the true vine",15:1

Comparison: In the Synoptics, which John omitted (historical facts):
_Jesus' Genealogy and birth
_his baptism and temptation
_his Galilean and Perean ministries
_his parables
_his transfiguration
_the Lord's supper
_Gethsemane
_the ascension

*John primarily theological and interpretative:
Focus
-Christ's early ministry in Judea and Jerusalem;while the Synoptics record only one visit to Jerusalem, John records 4(2:13-25;5;7:10-10:39:12-19)
-his contacts and private conversations with individuals(3:1-21;4:1-26)
-his ministry to the disciples,13-17

*John and Synoptics
-If we only have the Synoptics,we would know nothing of the washing of feet,13
-if we only have John,we would know nothing of the institution of the Lord's Supper,,Mt26:26-30

1Jn:John's Gospel was written to lead people in faith in Christ (20:30,31);the epistle was written to confirm believers in the faith,1Jn5:13

Rv: John 's Gospel presents the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth on earth; Rv present the ministry of exalted Jesus from heaven

Chapter 10

Chapter 11

Chapter 12

Chapter 13-14

Chapter 15-16

Chapter 17-18

Chapter  19-20

Chapter  21-24

Background:The first 2 chapters of this Gospel contain several unique incidents related to Jesus' birth and early life. Luke traces Jesus' family tree to Adam, which underlines the emphasis on Jesus as the Saviour of the whole world. He stresses that Jesus is concerned for minority groups, for the poor and the oppressed . Other prominent themes are prayer, joy and the Holy Spirit. He often cross-references events to dates in secular history. He is also the author of Acts

Author:Luke, the beloved physician(1:1Col.4:14) and was the only one who remained with Paul during his second imprisonment(2Ti4:11)
*Both Luke and Paul have been suggested as possible authors of Hebrews

Date: Since Acts ends with Paul still in Prison before his release in AD62, we can assume that Luke was written before that date probably c.58-60

Recipients:Theophilus(1:1)

Purpose:
-Confirm the faith to him
-Present Jesus to Gentiles a the Son of Man who, though rejected by Israel, had come to save all mankind

Unique Features:

-Like is a product of exhaustive research(1:1-3)
-Most thorough concerning Christ's birth
-Containing 5 great songs and 3 angelic benedictions(1,2)
-shows a special interest in women(1,2;8:1-3;10:38-42;23:27,28) the poor(7:11-13;14:12-14) and children(2:39-52;9:46-48;18:15-17)

Comparison:

Eze-"Son of Man"(90x) representative of Israel;Luke God's representative
Mt,Mk,and Jn. See Matt.
Luke contains by far the most complete account of Christ's family background, birth and childhood
-Acts and Hebrews: whether or not Luke authored Hebrews , his gospel can be considered the first volume of Trilogy: Luke(Christ's earthly ministry);Acts(his ministry through his church);Hebrews(His High Priestly ministry )
