1Thessalonians,Paul's Epistle To The

Thessaloniki (Greek: Θεσσαλονίκη, IPA: /θesaloˈnici/), Thessalonica, or Salonica is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the region of Macedonia. Its honorific title is Συμпρωτεύουσα (Symprotévousa), literally "co-capital", a reference to its historical status as the Συμβασιλεύουσα (Symvasilévousa) or "co-reigning" city of the Byzantine Empire, alongside Constantinople. According to the 2001 census, the municipality of Thessaloniki had a population of 363,987, its Urban Area 800,764 and the Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of Thessaloniki has an estimated 995,766 residents (2004).[2]

Background:Paul founded this church on his second missionary tour(Ac17:1-9)amid a lot of opposition from Jews. This and 2Th are among the earliest letters. No doubt because the Jews had continued to undermine his reputation Paul begins by insisting that he is a true apostle(1,2).From ch3 we learn that Timothy had been sent to the church and had returned to Paul with an encouraging report. In ch4,5 Paul deals with 2 questions:what happens to Christians when they die?and when will Jesus return?

Colossians,Paul's Epistle To The

Colossae or Colosse (also known as Chonae or Kona; Greek: Κολοσσαί, Χωναί/Χῶναι), was an ancient city of Phrygia, on the Lycus, which is a tributary of the Maeander River. It was situated about 12 miles above Laodicea, and near the great road from Ephesus to the Euphrates. The site, located near the modern town of Honaz in Turkey, has never been excavated.

Background: The Church was founded by Epaphras, one of Paul's converts. The contents of the letter make it clear that wrong teaching was creeping into the church. In the face of this Paul stresses the true gospel:Jesus is absolutely central. He existed before time began and he is the one who brings God and the human race together(1).Rituals,regulations,philosophical reasonings and self-denial are not what is required(2)but right relationships and attitudes in the church, the family, the work place and the world(3,4)

Author: Paul(1:1,23;4:18)see Romans

Recipients:Christians in Colosse,who Paul never personally visited(1:4,78;2:1)

Philippians, Paul’s Epistle To The

Philippi (Greek Philippoi) was a city in eastern Macedonia, established by Philip II in 356 BCOttoman conquest. and abandoned in the 14th century after the Ottoman conquest.

Courtesy of James Earl Jones(Bible Audio)The Book of Philippians

Background: Paul established this church on his secondary missionary tour(Ac16:6-40),and this letter was written some 10 or 12 years after that visit. It is a warm, personal letter to a church for which he felt a deep affection. He speaks of his imprisonment which has resulted in the gospel being preached to Roman personel(1). Ch2 contains an important statement about Jesus as the servant who was willing to give up his rights for the good of others, and Paul encourages the church to follow that example. 4chs

Author: Paul(1:1;3:4-6),see Romans

Date and Location: Since Paul seemed confident of either acquittal or release from prison(1:19,25;2:24;Philem1:22),he probably wrote Philippians toward the end of his time of house arrest,c.AD61,about a year after he wrote Eph. and Col.

Purpose:
-To thank the Philippians believers for their financial help
-Addresses problems in the Philippian church, especially rivalry between 2 women:Eodia and Syntyche
-To refute the teachings of Judaizers(3:1-3)and of some who were going to opposite extreme, perhaps advocating a total disregard for law or a hedonistic life-style(3:18,19)

Unique Features:
-Most personal letter of Paul’s letters to the churches, with more the 100 first person pronoun in its four short chapters

Ephesians,Paul's Letter To The

*Eph3:3,4,first letter wrote

Background:This letter may have been written to several churches in and around the important city of Ephesus. Paul founded this church on his third missionary tour(Ac18:23-20:1)The clear theme of the letter is unity:God's plan is to bring an end all that divides men and women, social classes, cultures, nations and religions.Jesus Christ is the unifying force,as the head unites the human body.Ch4-6 show that this does not mean we can do as we like. Christians are called to serve one another in love and the Holy Spirit is given to help them do this.

Author:Paul(1:1;3:1,seeRomans)

Date and Location:Paul was in prison when he wrote this letter(3:1;4:1;6:20)if refer to Caesarea (Ac24:27)it would have been written about AD57-59,if in Rome(Ac28:30),it is written about 60-62.Since he express no hope of release,it was probably just after his coming to Rome, while he was imprisoned in his own rented house(Ac28:30)

Recipients:The words"in Ephesus"(1:1)are missing in some important Greek manuscripts. This, coupled with the fact that there are no personal greetings in the letter and in specific church problems is addressed, has given rise to the idea that Ephesians was originally a cyclical letter, intended for circulation among the 7 churches of Asia Minor(Rv2,3).However,the majority of extent Greek manuscripts do include"in Ephesus" and none of those manuscripts indicate their destination.Ephesians may have been intended as a cyclical letter, being first send to Ephesus, the main city of Asia, where Paul had made his headquarters as he ministered throughout that region(Ac19:10).Having receive good report about these churches(1:15)and hearing that Tychicus(6:21)was ready to make a trip to Ephesus,Paul seized the opportunity to send the letter.

Purpose:
-To teach about the church as the body of Christ, composed of both Jews and Gentile believers
-To exhort believers to conduct themselves properly toward one another because of their oneness in Christ
-To equip them for spiritual warfare.

Unique Features:
-Addresses no specific church problem
-One of Paul's letter ,one 2 persons appeared:Paul and Tychicus
-In the original Greek,1:3-14 is the longest sentence in the Bible
-the phrase"in the heavenly realms",occurs 5x(1:3,20:2:6;3:10;6:12)and nowhere else in Scripture
-3 great figure of speech to illustrate our union with Christ:building(2:21,22)body(1:22,23;4:15)bride(5:25-32)

Comparison:
*Jos-earthly realms;Eph.-heavenly realms
*Col.-The content of 78 of the 115 verses in Eph. is repeated in Col. with slight differences;78 out of the 95 verses in Col. resembles Eph:
*Both stress the relationship between Christ the head and the church his body
*Eph. emphasizes the body, while Col. emphasizes the head
*Wrote Php., Col.,2Ti,Philem.and Eph.-while in prison in Rome, with 2Ti. coming during his second imprisonment when death was near

Galatians,Paul's Epistles To The

[Gr. Galateia,so called from the Gauls who invaded it]
Background:This is probably the first of Paul's letters and its theme is similar to that of Romans. It is apparent that many Jews felt non-Jews becoming Christians should keep the Jewish law and in particular the food laws and be circumcised .(acts also tells us this). The heart of Paul's teaching on this view is found in 2:14-21:a right relationship with God is possible only through Jesus, and nothing else is reqiured.Ch5,6 show that this does not mean we can do as we like.Christians are called to serve one another in love and the Holy Spirit is given to help them do this. 6chs

Author:Paul(1:1;5:2),see Romans

Date,Location and Recipients:Churches of Galatia(1:2) Different opinions on the date.In Paul's day,Galatia reffered to 2 different areas:
-Geographically,northernly region Paul visited on his second missionary journey(Ac16:6;18:23)
-Politically,a Roman province, more southernly regions[Iconium,Lystra and Derbe]which Paul visited on hisfirst missionary journey(Ac13:14-14:24)and revisited on his secondary missionary journey(16:1-6)and on his third missionary journey(18:23)*If 2:1 refers to the Jerusalem Council(Ac15),then Paul may have written this letter to southern Galatia. That would give Galatians a date of about AD49,making it earliest of Paul's letters

Purpose:
-vindicate Paul's apostleship and message
-to show that God's righteousness(justification)can be receive by faith alone apart from the law
-to discuss the meaning of Christian Liberty and to show that it does not mean freedom to sin

Unique Features:
-offer no commendation
-Doctrine of Justification by faith is stated more emphatically
-unusual amount of history.1:18 and 2:1give crucial clues to chronology of Paul's life

-striking contrasts:
*flesh and work vs. the cross
*circumcision vs. the new creation
*faith vs. law

-Paul usual used an amanuesis (secretary)in writing his letters, but he wrote at least part and perhaps all of Galatians(6:11)

Comparison: Ga., see Romans
Gal.-discuss controversy what Rom. discusses systematically
2Co.-Paul's defense of hi s apostleship(1,2)is somewhat parallel to the entire book of 2Co.
Heb. and Gal.-talks about the new Covenant's superiority to the old

Abbreviations: Gal./ Ga.

2Corinthians,Paul's Epistle To The

Corinth had a reputation for its depravity, and the temple prostitutes of Aphrodite did not help in saving the city’s bad name. There was even a Greek word, korinthiazomai (Corinthianize), which meant “to practice fornication.”

Chapter 1-6

Chapter 7-10

Chapter 11-13

3rd(severe letter),2Co2:4;7:8,9 This letter is actually the fourth

While there is little doubt among scholars that Paul is the author, there is discussion over whether the Epistle was originally one letter or composed from two or more of Paul's letters.

Although the New Testament only contains two letters to the Corinthians, the evidence from the letters themselves is that he wrote at least four:
  1. 1 Cor 5:9 ("I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people", NIV) refers to an early letter, sometimes called the "warning letter".
  2. 1 Corinthians
  3. The Severe Letter. Paul refers to an earlier "letter of tears" in 2 Corinthians 2:3-4 and 7:8. 1 Corinthians does not match that description; so this "letter of tears" may have been written between 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians.
  4. 2 Corinthians
The abrupt change of tone from being previously harmonious to bitterly reproachful in 2 Corinthians 10-13 has led many to speculate that chapters 10-13 form part of the "letter of tears" which were in some way tagged on to Paul's main letter.[1] Those who disagree with this assessment usually say that the "letter of tears" is no longer extant.[2]
Some scholars also find fragments of the "warning letter", or of other letters, in chapters 1-9,[3] for instance that part of the "warning letter" is preserved in 2 Cor 6:14-7:1,[1] but these hypotheses are less popular.[4]

Background:Between this and the previous letter Paul visited the church. There have been a lot of criticism and even hostility shown to him,and his authority as a leader had been called into question.Relationships had improved but Paul fonds it necessary to stress the genuineness of his authority as an apostle(2,3,10-13).The letter shows how deeply Paul felt(7)Ch5 contains further teaching on life after death, and ch8,9 give about an appeal for financial help for a group of church facing hardship.

Author:Paul(1:1;10:1),see Romans

Date:AD56,about 6months after 1Corinthians

Location:Paul left Ephesus in the spring of 56(after writing 1Cor)and was bound for Troas ,where he hope to meet Titus there, and get a report from Corinth(2:12,13)failing to find Titus there, hecontinued on to Macedonia(Ac20:1),where he did meet Titus and he heard the situation in Corinth, where upon he wrote this letter.

Recipients:See 1Corinthians

Purpose:
-explain why his plans for another visit to Corinth had changed(1:12-2:4)
-Instruct concerning the restoration of an offending brother(2:5-110)
-express joy for the revival of the church as a result of harsh letter(2:12,13;7:15,16)
-discuss his motivation for ministry and to defend himself against his opponents(2:12-6:10;10-13)
-encourage holiness(6:11-7:16)
-encourage generous giving(8,9)

Unique Features:
-most autobiographical of Paul's letters(his personal life and his ministry)
-least doctrinal, with the possible exception of Philemon but contains deep doctrinal truths(3-8,especially 5)
-gives insights in to the character and tactics of false teachers and Satan

Comparison:
*Rom.,primarily doctrinal and secondary practical;2Cor.,primarily practical ,secondary doctrinal
*Rom.,Systematic;2Cor.,least systematic of Paul's letters
*2Cor.,Gal. and Heb.,emphasizes the New Covenant
