Background:This letter was written to Christian in the Black Sea coastal area,probably in the early 60AD.

The theme is suffering, and probably the readers were facing real persecution because they were Christians.Christians must not be surprised if they experience opposition and persecution: Jesus,their example,certainly did!Indeed,they may be full of hope and joy because they are sharing with Jesus in this way. Throughout the letter there are also practical guidelines on Christian behaviour.5Chs

Date and Location:AD63-64,just before Nero's persecutions and the death of Paul from Babylon(5:13)which could have been either the ancient city on the Euphrates or Rome, coded among its victims of oppression

Recipients:Christians,both Jews and Gentiles scattered throughout several province of Asia Minor(1:1)

Purpose:
-To encourage and instruct Christians concerning persecution(3:13-5:11)
-To instruct concerning subjection(2:11-3:12)
-To instruct concerning salvation(1-2:10)
-Confirm Peter's agreement with Paul(2P3:14-18)

Unique Features:
-a very polish Gr.literary style
-emphasizes Christ's sufferings,mentioning them in order
-show great tenderness in his letter
-his rhetorical style is similar to that of his speeches in Acts
-For its length,1Peter contains more OT quotations than any NT books

Comparison:
*2Co.both deal extensively with suffering:2Co.concerning the sufferings of Paul;1Peter concerning the sufferings of Christians generally
*Jas:both were addressed to Christians scattered a broad by persecution,and both are intensely practical:
*Jas. written c.45,addressed primarily Jew Christians
*1P written some 20yrs latter,addressed Jews as well as many Gentiles who had by then become believers and faced similar opposition
